Eye Test Melbourne — Bulk Billed Optometrist at Che Eyewear
Bulk Billed Eye Tests — Medicare Covered
At Che Eyewear, eye tests are bulk billed under Medicare — meaning eligible Australian residents pay nothing out of pocket. No gap fees, no hidden costs. Just a thorough, professional eye examination with our in-house optometrist, right here in Fitzroy.
We have been dispensing eyewear from 303 Smith Street for over 30 years. In that time, we have built a reputation as one of Melbourne's most trusted independent optometry and eyewear destinations — not because we operate like a chain, but because we don't. Every consultation is unhurried. Every prescription is taken seriously. And if you need new frames or lenses, our full eyewear collection is here the moment your test is done.
If you have been putting off an eye test, this is the clearest reason not to: it costs you nothing.
Our In-House Optometrist
Our eye examinations are comprehensive and fully bulk billed for eligible Australian residents with a valid Medicare card. There is no gap payment, and no referral is required.
What is covered in a standard examination:
- Full assessment of visual acuity and prescription
- Ocular health screening (glaucoma, macular health, retinal assessment)
- Contact lens fittings and updated contact lens prescriptions
- Referrals where specialist care is indicated
If your test results in a prescription change, you can move directly from the consulting room to our eyewear floor. Our optometrist works alongside our dispensing team — so you leave with the right prescription and the right frames.

What to Expect During Your Eye Examination
A standard eye examination at Che Eyewear takes approximately 30 minutes. Our optometrist will assess your distance and near vision, check eye pressure, examine the health of your retina and optic nerve, and update your prescription where needed.
The test is non-invasive and suits adults and children alike. If you wear contact lenses, let us know at booking — we allow a little extra time for a thorough fitting assessment.
Eye Testing Schedule
Wed 12pm – 4pm
Fri 10am – 5pm
Sat 10am – 4pm
Please note: Fridays and Saturdays alternate each week. If testing is available on Friday, it will not run on Saturday that week, and vice versa.

Is my eye test bulk billed at Che Eyewear?
Yes. Eye tests at Che Eyewear are bulk billed for eligible Australian residents holding a valid Medicare card. You pay nothing out of pocket — no gap fees, no hidden costs.
What does a bulk billed eye test include?
Your bulk billed eye examination includes a full assessment of visual acuity and prescription, ocular health screening (glaucoma, macular health and retinal assessment), and a contact lens assessment if required. Where specialist care is indicated, we will provide a referral.
How long does an eye test take?
Most appointments run for approximately 30 minutes. If you wear contact lenses or require a fitting assessment, allow a little extra time.
Do I need a referral to see an optometrist?
No referral is required. You can book directly with us online or by calling the store.
How often should I get my eyes tested?
Adults should have their eyes tested at least every two years. Annual testing is recommended if you wear prescription eyewear or contact lenses, or if you have a family history of eye conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration.
Can children get bulk billed eye tests in Melbourne?
Yes. Children with a valid Medicare card are eligible for bulk billed eye tests at Che Eyewear. Early testing is recommended — ideally before starting school — to identify any vision issues that may affect learning.
What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?
An optometrist assesses vision, prescribes glasses and contact lenses, and screens for eye health conditions. An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specialises in eye surgery and complex eye disease. For routine eye tests and prescription eyewear, an optometrist is your first point of contact. We will refer you to an ophthalmologist if specialist care is needed.
What should I bring to my eye test appointment?
Please bring your Medicare card, your current glasses or contact lenses, and any previous prescription if you have one. If you take any medications, it is worth noting these as some can affect eye health.
Can I get prescription glasses or contact lenses after my eye test?
Yes. Our full eyewear collection is available in store, and our dispensing team works alongside the optometrist to help you find frames suited to your prescription and face shape. We stock contemporary designer frames as well as one of Melbourne's largest collections of authentic vintage eyewear.
Where is Che Eyewear located and is there parking?
